Details

You must complete the form IHT400, as part of the probate or confirmation process if there’s Inheritance Tax to pay, or the deceased’s estate does not qualify as an ‘excepted estate’. You can use the notes and forms IHT401 to IHT436 to support you.

You’ll need to fill in the form fully before you can print it. You cannot save a partly completed form so we suggest you gather all your information together before you begin to fill it in.

The Inheritance Tax account (IHT400) form is interactive (one that you complete on screen) and you must use Adobe Reader to complete it.

  1. A new version of the IHT400 form has been added. The IHT400 notes 2021 and IHT400 notes 2022 have been updated to reflect the change to the probate application process. If you're applying for probate in England and Wales you will now need to enter a unique reference code provided by HMRC.

  2. The IHT400 form has been updated to give the customer guidance on using the tax checker before proceeding.

  3. The 'Complete your Inheritance Tax account (IHT400)' form has been updated to give you guidance on using the tax checker before you start to fill in the form.

  4. Box 2 on the IHT400 calculation form has been updated.

  5. The form has been updated to make it clear you should not submit original documents with your application and must enclose an IHT421 or C1 if you're applying for probate or confirmation.

  6. The IHT400 2022 notes have been updated with references to lump sums changed to death benefits to reflect legislative changes.

  7. The IHT400 Notes have been updated to reflect changes to the reporting regulations for non-taxpaying estates and excepted estates qualifying criteria, for deaths on or after 1 January 2022.
